How they actually differ
The mechanism is a chemistry difference, and everything else follows from it. Polygel is a hybrid: acrylic polymer suspended in a gel base. It stays workable until you cure it, so a technician can push, shape and thin it with a brush and slip solution, then lock the shape under a UV or LED lamp. That controllable working time is why polygel can carry an apex — the load-bearing arch that keeps a long nail from snapping at the stress point — and why it can be filled at the cuticle every three weeks instead of being removed.
Dip powder works the other way. The technician brushes on a cyanoacrylate resin, dips the nail into finely milled acrylic powder, and repeats, then applies an activator that hardens the whole stack chemically. There is no lamp and almost no working time; you get a strong, thin, even coating that follows the nail's existing shape. It cannot be sculpted into an extension and cannot be structurally repaired, which is why a chip usually means a full redo.
Both systems belong to the same chemical family, and that is where the honest risk lies. A tertiary-centre study published in Acta Dermato-Venereologica, covering patch tests from June 2013 to July 2022, found that of 396 patients tested with the extended (meth)acrylate–nails series, 153 (38.6%) were positive to at least one acrylate, and 131 of those (85.6%) reacted to 2-hydroxyethyl methacrylate. Sensitisation is not rare among people who present with nail-related dermatitis, and it is permanent once established — which is why uncured product touching the skin, rather than the nail plate, is the thing to watch in the chair.
The occupational picture reinforces it. OSHA lists ethyl methacrylate and methyl methacrylate among nail salon chemical hazards, associating EMA with asthma and difficulty concentrating, and notes that acetone — the solvent both systems are removed with — causes headaches, dizziness and irritated eyes, skin and throat.
What each one costs
Neither service has a verified national price benchmark to quote here, so treat any single figure you see online with suspicion. What actually drives your quote is technician level, whether length is being built, whether you are having a fill or a full set, and how much removal work the previous set requires. Ask for the fill price and the removal price separately when you book — that is where quotes diverge most.
Who should choose which
Choose polygel if your nails break at the free edge, if you bite or pick, or if you want length you do not naturally have. The structural apex is the entire point, and a refill at three weeks keeps the enhancement on for months without repeated full removal — which, done well, means less acetone exposure over a year than a dip cycle. It also suits anyone who wants a specific shape: ballerina, almond and stiletto need sculpting, and dip cannot do it.
Choose dip powder if your own nails are already the length you like, you want colour that survives a fortnight of dishes and typing, and you would rather be out of the salon in under an hour. It is also the better option if you cannot or would rather not sit under a UV lamp; the American Academy of Dermatology advises applying broad-spectrum, water-resistant SPF 30 or higher to the hands before a lamp-cured manicure, or wearing dark gloves with the fingertips cut off.
Whichever you pick, removal decides how your nails look afterwards. The AAD's guidance is specific and applies to both: do not pick at lifting product, soak only the fingertips in acetone rather than the whole hand, and take a polish-free period of one to two weeks between applications so the nail plate can rehydrate. Petroleum jelly or a nail oil applied several times a day during that break does more for brittleness than any strengthening base coat.
